Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a virus which is spread via the infected blood and bodily fluids of a person carrying the infection.

Hepatitis B most commonly affects people in areas where the infection is most common, such as Southeast Asia and parts of Africa.

If a long term infection develops, this is known as Chronic Hepatitis B, and can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Vaccination is recommended for people in high-risk groups, such as:

  • Healthcare Workers
  • People who inject drugs
  • Men who have sex with men
  • People travelling to parts of the world where the infection is more common

Vaccine

The Hepatitis B vaccine is normally a three dose course. It can be given over varying time scales depending on your circumstances. The length of the original course would also determine if any boosters were needed.

During the consultation we will discuss the best course of action for you, and make a decision based upon this.
